I would suggest you think about the cost of ssh versus sending passwords in clear over the internet. I think you will find pretty quick that ssh doesn't have enough overhead to be a problem where compromising your server would be a big problem.
Please think about security all the time. When done thinking about security, the other benefit of the ssh tunnel was such that it allowed an easy way to go through his firewall.
