I made the jump to Gigabit last year for a number of reasons: Internal traffic from the (mail, web, natrouter) server was heavy enough that at times it seemed to affect internet traffic. Large file transfers to and from the file server had a tendancy to bog things down across the board. I had a bunch of Gig-E capable systems, so why not?
I bought a netgear 8 port switch - I've had good luck with netgear in spite of a somewhat questionable reputation they seem to have in some circles. I have not had any slowdown, perceived or otherwise since I set it up. I get 18MB/s on large file transfers, making it much faster to do backups, etc. than it was at 8ish on 100Mb. The time I have saved in the past year waiting on video files and backups to transfer has been worth the upgrade, but I move a lot of ~20-30 gig raw video files around the network to various workstations from the storage server or to it from a capture machine. If you aren't moving large files with some frequency, the amount of advantage you'll see is questionable in my mind unless you generate insane amounts of random traffic (streaming, etc) on your network. Just some thoughts.
