Cheap switches will slow transfers down. Part of going to gigabit is
to be able to use jumbo frames. Jumbo frames let you send more data with
the same amount of ethernet overhead. Less overhead means better speeds
on top of the higher bit rate. Cheap switches may not handle jumbo
frames well or even at all.

Good switches will let you do full speed up and down on all ports at the
same time. Granted I have seen one of these better switches fail and
screw up the transfers as well.

Don't go too cheap or you will not see much in the way of benefit.

If you are inclined to go cheap, you would be better thinking if you
are really moving enough data around your home network to justify the
need for gigabit. If you can't say that your need justifies spending
the money on decent equipment, then stay on good 100mbit equip.
