I beg to differ. I have an OC3 into my house where I run Gigabit ethernet. If I only ran 100 Mbit ethernet, I would not be able to use the full bandwidth of my OC3. <-- Just ordered in a bigger shovel :-) --> Seriously though, in general you are correct. Almost all home internet connections are well below the 100 Mbit range though in certain areas, Verizon and Comcast are testing 50 Mbit connections. 50 Mbit is enough of a slice of your 100 Mb network for local transfers to impact your internet usage.[1] Therefore, depending on what you are doing with your network and how fast your internet connection really is, you may or may not see a benefit from going to Gigabit. [1] Provided you are using a hub rather than switch (unheard of today), you are swamping your switch's internal bandwidth, or you are connection to the internet on the same leg of your network you are transfering all this data.
