Thought I'd write a quick note exposing my innocence regarding things wireless network. Those of us using Ubuntu, especially 8.04 or later, think nothing of connecting to a wireless network with a hidden ESSID. The Robertson County Chamber of Commerce just upgraded their facility and did not have a wireless access point until this morning. I reconfigured an older 802.11b unit I was not using and set it up -- with a hidden ESSID and a WEP key. I know and you know those two security measures are pretty lame.
I got my laptop connected to this kit without issues. Next, get the staff at the Chamber connected. Short answer: sheezus! The director's laptop had a Dell specific utility that made connecting to a WAP with hidden ESSID no big deal but the director was correctly concerned that showing other luddites how to make the same connection would be quite difficult. IT IS! I give you the following knowledge page from M$ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb726942.aspx The director expressed the desire to have a wireless network for the staff as well as the one I just configured for visitors. hmmmmm. Me thinks I shall allow the visitor network to broadcast and make the staff network hidden. And yes, there are several other WAPs in the neighborhood broadcasting. Did not try to crack into them.
