http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/easy-transfer.aspx for Windows Vista+ This works too BUT you can clone the disk with dd_rescue and save the hassle of resinstalling and restoring the backup image the above tool creates. The cloned disk with dd_rescue clones Boot track and all. It should boot right up as if it were the original sick disk.
