They set it up that way for "security reasons", or so they say. I assume since
the distro is more aimed at us who are tired of messing with junk, and the
unwashed masses, they decided to lock it down a bit. So root has no login or
password. Everything is sudo and not all users can sudo.
To get you where you want to be ( su - ) when using Ubuntu try:
$ sudo -i
<your password>
g
