When I last tried something like that (in something else), I discovered that
"\n" wasn't portable.  Perhaps the best thing is something like:

cat <<'EOC' | ex > /dev/null 2>&1
r /nonexist-file

or perhaps

(echo 'r /nonexist-file'; echo 'q') | ex > /dev/null 2>&1
