We have also used the Sitescope tools. They are now owned by Mercury
Interactive, who does Topaz and Winrunner. We can monitor perfmon counters
and define thresholds to alert on. It doesn't require anything additional
be installed in the NT/2000 box. Right now I have it watching a box that
is running a service with a memory leak. We have it paging me when the box
start to have trouble, so I can intervene before it is completely hung.
Even though we restart the service once an hour and reboot every 24 hours,
it still sometimes gets trashed. I would love to get rid of the software
that is leaking or fix the leak, but we are still working on that with the
vendor.

I don't know the new pricing, but it wasn't bad when it was Sitescope.
Sitescope will also do UNIX boxes, although I think they might need a small
agent on the box.

I know there is the perf monitor included with Win2k...but is there a
better
tool that admin's out there highly recommend to be able to monitor all
critical activity on a server and show where the bottlenecks are and
recommend improvements in architecture?

I have multiple cases to need a tool to actively monitor the server and
record activity for the day and find out where and how the server is being
utilized (drive i/o, error, network i/o, cpu and more). Then, when a user
complains about network slowness, I can pinpoint exactly what is going on.
Would be nice to have the tool take the numbers and apply to real world
answers to the causes and solutions based on theory.

What are people using that works the best and will not break the bank.

Thanks for the input.

Ron
