I quess I wasn't very clear.
The old computer was Win 2000 Serv.
The new computer is Win 2000 Ser.
The old computer was reformted and Win 2000 Pro installed.
I do have two other domain controllers in my domain.
It will not promote the new computer to a domain controller saying
It can't find the domain. (every computer (9 of them) logon fine every
morning).
The reason I found that I don't think it is working properly, I am
setting a laptop up with our DocuWare software and it always gives me the
error
that it can't find the domain controller. It has Win 98. (I now think this
error is unrelated to the domain controllers). I then went in to my new
server
and tried to add the computer. I didn't have any AD setup on the new
computer.
I tried to add it and got the error above.

So am I still screwed.

Kevin

You're right, it was confusing. But I still think he is screwed. Active
Directory with single DC, rebuilds DC without backing up = lose entire
active directory database = reinstall active directory from scratch along
with having to recreate all computer and user accounts. Lots of fun,
methinks.

Well it was confusing the way he put it in parenthese. Any way,

KT, you really ought to describe your symptoms before you say "what I
think is screwing up my domain". Can you specify what is screwed in
your domain? Any error messages? Was your old computer the first DC?
Does it hold the GC role? Is there any other GC's in the domain? How
many other DC's do you have in the domain? Etc...

He didn't say that the old computer was win2k pro. He rebuilt it with
win2k pro.

How can your old computer be a Domain Controller if it was a Win2000
pro?

You did a full backup of the original Domain Controller, right?

It appears that I have screwed up big time.

He is what I did.
I recieved a new computer to replace the one (domain controller) that I
was using. I in ignorance, I blissfully set up the new
computer. Set it up with Advanced server (2000), with a differant name
than the old computer. I then rebuilt the older computer (Win2000 pro)
and gave it a new name. So, the old name from the old computer is still
out there as a controler. I think this is screwing up my domain. So how
do I get rid of the old computer? or point me to directions?

Thanks

Kevin
