Are you familiar with the 5 FSMO roles of a Windows 2000 network. If
that term doesn't ring a bell, you need to read up somethings. My guess
is that the DC you deleted was carrying some of the roles that non of
other DC is set to be, like PDC Emulator, Global Catalogue (GC), etc.
that is onlyl one per domain. So, now I have to say, you are screwed.

Since you don't have much clients PCs. Time to rebuilt.

When I tried to add the computer, I was talking about the laptop. I
didn't think you could get access to a domain unless you were in the
Act. Dir.. The old DC was WINS server, DNS, etc for the whole network. I
do have a DC that is acting as a backup for everything. I don't think
it is working right, though. I have tried to remove the old DC but it
gives me an error that it can't find it. That makes sence since it is
not there anymore.

My small domain consistes of 3 DC's. 2 for WINS, DNS, ect. and 1 file
server. 9 other computer consisting of both Win 95(2 comps) and 7 Win
2000 Pro. On one of the DC, I have SQL server running, with DocuWare.
The other DC is my personal machine.

Ok, now it's better. You might have a chance... :)

1. Was the old DC the only WINS server for the network? If that is the
case, then it will explain why your win98 can't log on to the network.

2. What do you mean by "I then went in to my new server and tried to add
the computer." Were you referring to try to join this new server to the
domain?

3. Did you remove the old DC from the Domain controllers OU in the AD?

I quess I wasn't very clear.
The old computer was Win 2000 Serv.
The new computer is Win 2000 Ser.
The old computer was reformted and Win 2000 Pro installed.
I do have two other domain controllers in my domain.
It will not promote the new computer to a domain controller saying It
can't find the domain. (every computer (9 of them) logon fine every
morning). The reason I found that I don't think it is working properly,
I am setting a laptop up with our DocuWare software and it always gives
me the error that it can't find the domain controller. It has Win 98.
(I now think this error is unrelated to the domain controllers). I then
went in to my new server and tried to add the computer. I didn't have
any AD setup on the new computer. I tried to add it and got the error
above.

So am I still screwed.

You're right, it was confusing. But I still think he is screwed. Active
Directory with single DC, rebuilds DC without backing up = lose entire
active directory database = reinstall active directory from scratch
along with having to recreate all computer and user accounts. Lots of
fun, methinks.

Well it was confusing the way he put it in parenthese. Any way,

KT, you really ought to describe your symptoms before you say "what I
think is screwing up my domain". Can you specify what is screwed in
your domain? Any error messages? Was your old computer the first DC?
Does it hold the GC role? Is there any other GC's in the domain? How
many other DC's do you have in the domain? Etc...

He didn't say that the old computer was win2k pro. He rebuilt it with
win2k pro.

How can your old computer be a Domain Controller if it was a Win2000
pro?

You did a full backup of the original Domain Controller, right?

It appears that I have screwed up big time.

He is what I did.
I recieved a new computer to replace the one (domain controller) that I
was using. I in ignorance, I blissfully set up the new
computer. Set it up with Advanced server (2000), with a differant name
than the old computer. I then rebuilt the older computer (Win2000 pro)
and gave it a new name. So, the old name from the old computer is still
out there as a controler. I think this is screwing up my domain. So how
do I get rid of the old computer? or point me to directions?

Thanks

Kevin
