As I read his email, the current network is Novell and AD together - I might be incorrect, but "...to an AD only network" makes me think its running both today.
With that in mind, I don't think anyone other than the OxygenWasters[1] could argue that running multiple NOS's is less expensive than running a single one. And the driving decision doesn't need to be is A better than B, its does A and only A fit our needs well enough to be able to remove B from our environment. For instance, we currently run a mix of AD, Unix and AS/400 platforms, because for our needs, each was capable of doing things that the others couldn't do well enough to justify not using a specific platform. As platforms change, I'd expect we will revisit those decisions, but today, we run 3 platforms because those three are the best for our business needs. We dropped Novell a number of years ago because NT4 domains, at the time, could do everything that we needed to do well enough to not need 2 relatively similar platforms. With Exchange as the chosen messaging platform, Novell was the logical choice to stop using. While I'm not convinced that NDS is superior to AD[2], I'm willing to assume that it has its benefits. The question that needs to be answered is do those benefits significantly outweigh the complexity, cost, and supportability of running a Novell/AD mixed environment? The supportability thing is key, IMO, because each day there are fewer and fewer qualified Novell admins, and at that, I'd bet the ones that are out there are much more familiar with NetWare 4.x than 6.x. I'm not gonna run out and buy Novell anytime soon. > -----Original Message----- > From: Malcolm Reitz [mailto:Malcolm.Reitz@;Halliburton.com] > Sent: Friday, November 08, 2002 8:13 AM > To: NT 2000 Discussions > Subject: RE: Novell > > > I'm wary of his implied cost considerations.
