We've used both Legato and Veritas. In our experience, Veritas beats Legato and is a lot cheaper. I'd disagree with those who say Legato is better.
For example, recently we upgraded the servers our hospital software uses. One of those servers (where patient files are kept), had over 1.5 million files (small, too, around 5-50k). Backed up with Legato and then ran restore. After 12 hours Legato was still writing index files and hadn't even begun to restore from tape (well, we assume it was doing that; Legato doesn't say a heckavu lot about what it is currently doing). We ran Veritas and backed up and restore within less than 6 hours. Furthermore, as I said previously, Veritas reports a lot more information than Legato. Veritas tells you how long the backup took, what was backed up and the size of the data right from the GUI. With Legato, you have to scroll through Event Viewer to get that information. Also last time we checked, adding a server to be backed up, cost upwards of $1200 to license one more server. Perhaps someone can speak to the benefits/advantages of Legato but from our perspective, we'll use Veritas. This blows me away. Gotta be something with SP3. Has anyone used Legato? Many say it is better....but I have not checked if they compete with Veritas BE or are they above that in costs. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Fred Spanier Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 1:59 PM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: RE: Veritas BE engine hang I'm having the same problem. I have two clients now including our home office, where the BE job engine shuts down, try to restart and it will shut down again shortly. Works fine for awhile, then happens again. Grrr what a nuisance. Server is Win2k/sp3.
