Open up wins manager and see if there are any entries, that's the way to see if its working. You also need to configure the workstations and servers to see that wins server also, configured through dhcp or hard coded in the tcp ip settings. If you need it or not depends on the applications you want to run, if they use netbios, or dns. Is there a wins server any place in your environment, if so check that database and see if any entries are there.
