Unless you want to embark on a *major* learning project about *nix and firewall issues (and hey, there's nothing wrong with that :), I would recommend ClarkConnect. You will have to register if you want automatic security upgrades, but it is the most drop-dead-simple firewall/router that I know of that is reasonably secure and free.

One big caveat: ClarkConnect is easy to set up for DSL/Cable and other network-type Internet connections, but if you have only dial-up access, I'd look elsewhere.
