and FreeBSD when doing general services where security is less of a concern

but no less secure in practice. :))

eg, obsd had the same vulnerabilities a *bsd to last year's bsd telnet.

For this home situation, FreeBSD would be the much easier setup, with choice of ipfw2 or ipfilter.
