I think a lot of that depends on the load generated by each server, the number of clients accessing them, etc.
We split our servers into 4 subnets - basically core infrastructure (dc's, file and print, etc), internal enterprise applications (like our ERP, CRM etc), externally interfaced systems (those which connect to partners, other business units, etc), and development. The externally interfaced systems are double firewalled - they sit on a segment that's got firewalls towards both the partners/external side as well as one between them and the rest of our network. But those decisions are made based on our environment. We used to run a completely flat network here, when we had more total users. Performance was fine then, but I'm happier with the current layout. ------------------------------------------------------ Roger D.
