In my environment(s), the remote command shell would only be used across
private links, or over VPN sessions - but I can appreciate the concern for
security nonetheless - thanks.

Telnet should never be used on a public link due to passwords transitting 
in cleartext.  Likewise, most of the "r" are commands considered 
vulnerabilities.

ssh, secure shell, is the secure alternative.
