Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllll MSDE is way sexy and all, but it is throttled 
after 5 simultaneous connections (as you point out) and has a 2 gig size limit.

It's replication features are limited as well.  It isn't exactly free either, but it 
comes free with OfficeXP, and some other products etc.

Rather than looking at SQL, have you considered looking at the MS Database Engine 
(MSDE)? Its basically SQL Lite, and is free. I think there is a connection limit 
imposed though, so check it out first.
