Read the back traffic, the docs/FAQ and the news and release notes at
SourceForge.

I'm really tired of the whining... if somebody thinks they can do a better
job, then pony up some work effort.

If you're going to work with source and/or track the development of ntop
(the cvs). Then you need to have the damn tools installed. Period.

configure.in is the (platform-independent) master!

  YOU
    SHOULD
      ALWAYS
        RECREATE
configure via the ./autogen.sh -1 script.

Understand that the configure file is created from configure.in and a bunch
of other files INCLUDING THE TOOLS INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM. And so, the
version you get -- from ANY source -- is often wrong. Sometimes make
detects this and recreates configure and re-runs it. Sometimes make doesn't
detect problems and the make bombs.

As to why one package is different from others:

The individual who created the 2.1.3 tgz chose not to put a configure file
in it. When I posted his 2.1.3 tgz I honored his decision.

Luca and I normally update configure in our releases -- with the
understanding that it's still often WRONG and needs to be recreated on-site
via ./autogen.sh -1

When I commit changes to configure.in, I also try and update configure (via
./autogen.sh -1). I don't always do it. Luca rarely does it. This means
that configure in the cvs is often out of sync with configure.in and you
should run ./autogen.sh -1.

unless I am mistaken, there is still configure script in the snapshots
but somehow there is no configure script in the sources at sourceforge.
thus the advice is not completely wrong. =)

But at least there could be some instructions in source downloads also.
