sounds like the exact same problem I'm having with 2.2.x on SuSE 8.1 -
although i haven't had the time to gdb it yet.

It would be helpful if the automated problem report generator would
report the version of glibc being used, too... 

incidentally 2.1.3 and 2.1.56 work fine on the same box with the same
configure options under the same build environment.
