I really liked PFE32 but switched to the Crimson Editor 
(http://www.emeraldeditor.com/), an UltraEdit clone.  
A plain text editor with the ability to edit columns & macros is always a 
requirement for me.

I use notepad for most everything that's quick and dirty. For stuff that's not, 
I mostly use pfe32 - which is not supported anymore, but works well.
