As the father of 2 daughters that has encouraged them to stand up for
themselves in job interviews and be confident in the workplace, I'm
delighted when I meet a woman IT professional. I've only dealt with a
few directly, but each time I attend a IT function I see more and more
women.

As a woman who's been in IT since the early 80's (yup, I'm an old bag),
I've seen my share of age and sex discrimination. I've always been Pat,
not Patricia, so it can cause a stir when I show up for interviews. I
have always gotten great reviews for my work, but the pay has yet to
catch up with what men get paid for the same work. It is kind of fun to
work with the young "kids" and show them how networking and systems
should be done. I've only been dissed by a few, but they are the first
to come screaming for help when they get in trouble.

So, I would say, go for it. There are way too many companies who have
cut corners by hiring very inexperienced help and they need the
expertise.

All the best,

Pat Marshall

Back when I was taking engineering clasess,
If one girl walked in - we were all ... cool ... there is a girl in this
class
If two girls walked in - we started getting suspicious.
If 3 girls walked in, we were definitely in the wrong class and started
checking to see where we should be.

I think that is different now adays, probably have at least 2 girls in
some engineering classes.

On the other hand I was in a international relations class, and there
was only 1 guy in the whole class, all of the rest were girls. I
actually was not in the class, but running the projector.

I work with a couple of guys who are in their 50s and the experience
they have is invaluable. Having said that, there are also some 50 (and
60) -somethings in the Apps team downstairs and they are useless. Age is
immaterial - there are good and bad staff in both young and old camps.

I'd be more inclined to think that there's a bit of sexism rather than
age-ism in the IT sector, but that's just my own experience. But I
hardly ever seem to work with ladies (more's the pity). Don't know
whether that's down to discrimination or just the fact that as a rule
girls don't seem to be interested in IT as a career, particularly at the
more technical levels (no sexism intended there, before all the
technically-minded ladies on the list flame me).

Cheers,

Age Discrimination in IT: I have read several articles online that
states that age Discrimination in IT is more prevalent than in other
fields. Question, do you find this true or false? If you find it true
how do you handle it?

I am a former NT System Administrator that was semi-retired and that
wants to return to the IT field after a 10 year absence. Financially, I
do not need to work but want to. I feel that the fact my health at 52 is
excellent, am at the right weight etc, will be a plus in my favor.
