You probably should spend a couple of weeks in planning and another week or so in the lab before you do anything in the "real world". Namespace and IP address and port and firewall planning are all a PITA.
I've done Lync deployments several times, but it's a pretty detail oriented task. I prefer to leave it to experts. Regards, Michael B.
