You mentioned it. I was chided about not knowing about it, as if
everyone did. My point is, it didn't seem to be common knowledge amongst
the list membership. Or perhaps I'm an idiot and I'm the only one
amongst the 3K+ folks who was aware tis was the issue when folks were
clamoring for the list to be "fixed" recently.

"Better" is a subjective term, and one that very likely differs in
viewpoint from vendor and customer.

In this case I'm sure it's "better" if Lyris can extract more licensing
fees. But from a customer viewpoint, it seems that 2 orgs could both
push 500K messages thru a listserver, but if one has customers
concentrated in 4 US time zones, and another spread across the world,
the former is being penalized despite getting the SAME usage out of the
server.

You want to talk about usage based billing... my utility company doesn't
care if I pull 100 amps for 2 hours, or 10 amps for 20 hours.

The Lyris model isn't very accommodating for varying usage patterns.
And I almost always default to preferring what's "better" for me, than
for the vendor. ; )

Why mention it if it's common knowledge?

And why is one arbitrary licensing model any better than another?

Licensing per message sent is arguably the closest to usage-based
billing. If you have a lot of lists but almost no traffic, you're not
getting more use out of the software. If you have a lot subscribers but
almost no traffic, you're not getting more use out of the software. So
this is arguably "more fair".

On the gripping hand, why anyone would *pay* for a list server when
both Majordomo and GNU Mailman are free -- and apparently work better
-- is beyond me.
