SharePoint comes in two versions, free, SharePoint Foundation Server, and paid, SharePoint Server. SharePoint Foundation most likely will handle all their needs.
For server 2008 R2 you have to configure SharePoint from scratch, while with SBS, SharePoint is setup for you with the basics as part of Setup.
