This is still an issue for some users. I have not yet tracked it down
to the UPM profile folder, online plugin version, or something else.
And sometimes a user cannot get into Word, sometimes fine.

I just hung up from my Citrix partner. He told me this is "definitely"
an issue of installation on the Citrix servers. I don't buy that. On
10 servers? It's the same packaged install I used for my other XenApp
farm and never had this issue in the old farm. And this only happens
with Word. And the HMLM\...\Resiliency key which sometimes triggers the
safe mode doesn't exist on any of the servers.

If I discover anything useful I'll post it.

UPM is pretty good considering it is bundled with XenApp - its easy to
deploy and cuts out a lot of the roaming profile ugliness. But if you
want precision control of user state virtualization, AppSense EM is very
good. The latest version even allows users a self-service portal to
restore their profiles to a previous working state, which is a very
handy service to offer. If you want any more info feel free to ping me a
message offline, I don't work for AppSense so I will happily tell you
what's good and what's not from an independent point of view.

Cheers,

Thank you Webster and James for your advice. UPM is at least much
easier to use than roaming profiles, which are still in use on an older
XenApp 5.5 system. I'll take a look at Appsense.

Sorry for the delayed response. The US government which granted me a
US Passport and a Federal Security Clearance decided I was now of
“unknown origin”! I had to go to my local Social Security office to
prove I was USA bred and born. Weird.
Anyways, James is correct in his assessment. I would say that 99.999%
of these issues are caused by something being screwed up in the user’s
profile. Citrix profile best practice document lists your profiles
options as:
1. Mandatory
2. Roaming
3. UPM
4. 3rd-party
In my consultant role, I never have to deal with pricing so I don’t
know the costs of any Citrix or AppSense license. I have heard that if
you buy the full AppSense suite the retail license cost is $95/user. I
have heard it is MUCH cheaper if you buy just the EM part. I have also
been told that RES is now headed in the direction of automation and not
so much profile mgmt. But then again, I am a consultant – what do I
know? J

Subject: XenApp baffle: Word 2010 keeps opening in repair mode

For you XenApp folks...

I have a XenApp 6.5 farm that has issues with MS Word 2010. For some
reason, for many users, it keeps prompting them with "Word failed to
start correctly last time...do you want to start word in safe mode?"

Of course they can't start Word in safe mode, this being Terminal
Server/XenApp.

Any solutions or suggestions for this issue? This if Office 2010
Standard and the other Office apps run fine.

I use UPM to manage user profiles on a remote share, should that
matter.
