That was actually what I meant to be my principal point... - even if I didn't
make it particularly clearly...

*all* (electronic) computers die. No exception. There will come a point when
there are no other compatible donor systems left to cannibalise for spare
parts. What happens to the business when one morning someone turns the PC on
and it goes fizz... bang... pop... - even if you think you're mitigating this
scenario by running it 24/7 & never powering it on/off (on the basis that most
failures occur during this operation) it will still eventually just expire
anyway... - electrolytic capacitors, which I recall were fairly common on
motherboards of a certain vintage, will eventually bulge, leak, pop or
whatever... leading to at best instability, at worst a dead mobo... - and we
all know how "tolerant" Win95/98 family OS's were to changing the motherboard
under a functioning system... - I think every one I ever tried resulted in
almost immediate BSOD during the subsequent boot-up. (In most cases I think I
ended up having to do a clean reinstall).

You will also reach a point where any replacement hardware you are able to
utilise will be "too new" for Win95/98 to run on... - good luck trying to get
win95 chipset drivers for a Z68!!

I once went into a small family-run company which ran every aspect of their
business on a single, ancient PC which lived on the floor under the secretary's
desk, it was *SO* full of fluff & dirt that the fans barely turned, all the
company data and systems for ordering, stock control, accounting and invoicing
were on this machine on a single IDE HDD. If that PC died, then so did the
business - at least for a while anyway. I literally frogmarched the owner and
his credit card down to the local PC-World store and made him purchase not just
one, but 2 replacement machines and some basic networking kit... and hang the
cost, because whatever it was, it was a lot less than going out of business...

Different scenario I know, but the principle holds for most, if not any example
I should think...

Anyway, as you say, you do what you can... you make sure the management know
your concerns - "CYA" - then it's up to them if they want to risk putting the
company in a position where it cannot function...

:-)

So, it *was* possible - they just didn't want to pay the price.

Let's hope they mitigated the risk somehow - perhaps by making sure it wasn't
connected to a network and by making sure they had replacement hardware on the
shelf.
