I think I just heard Karma wake up and take a look around for her old pal, Murphy.

Seriously though, having a support contract for what most would consider a major part of any disaster/recovery plan seems a bit risky. While management in every company/public entity is always trying to do it "as cheaply as possible," I would still put together an analysis of cost to upgrade versus cost to recover based on your current environment. Given that BE is on version 12, you are going to soon have difficulties getting support for 10. Go back and look at the justifications to go to 10; many of those could still apply.

Another consideration is that version 10 likely has no understanding of Windows Server 2008/Exchange 2007/MOSS 2007. This is enough to cause any admin some sleepless nights. If you can't sell management on these reasons, then you may need to look for another opportunity before you find yourself the IT scapegoat for having a poor system.

Nah, why keep a support contract just for Backup software? I've run into snags here and there but a little google-fu or hacking around for a bit fixes the issue, or often just a reboot. I hear various horrors of BE but it runs very smoothly for me.

Would love to upgrade; I've done it in the past and it is very smooth.
However management is trying to do this as cheaply as possible :(

We're toying with the idea of moving to SBS 2008 mainly so we can
implement
Exchange. When SBS 2008 comes out, I hope there isnt a problem using
the BE
v10 Exchange Agent for it.

(off to read the helpfile...)

All I know is that the serial numbers do change for each version, so
each BE
upgrade you do need to get new keys.

So, can you plug the keys into v10 and have them work? - NO.
But, can you contact support and have them give you v10 compatible keys?
PROBABLY.

Or, just upgrade all your agents and server to the latest version of BE.
Upgrades are cake.

Thinking of finally implementing Exchange here, however, Backup Exec 10
Exchange agents are not too plentiful, so shopping around for a good
price
is tough. I see plenty of 11 agents for sale, but I would be wary about
its
serial number working in v10. Anyone know?
