When we first moved into this building, all jacks ("Phone", "Data") were
connected to the server room via Cat5e cables to the server room. For
some reason (I guess so some jacks could be split to support a digital
phone + a fax modem), most of the phone jacks were pulled out of the panel
and put into punch-down blocks. Issues(!):
1. I suffered two freak accidents within seconds - a shoulder dislocated
posteriorly and then being struck a blow that shattered the humerus bone
and completely severed the rotator cuff. Just try to punch in wires with
one arm (of the dominant hand) having the elbow anchored to the hip bone!
2. I underwent catacact surgery for both eyes and now require a series of
reading glasses for close-up work. I then had a retina detach. Try
finding the correct set of pins and slots in a punch-down block with only
one eye (and no depth perception).
3. No, I do NOT answer to the name of "Lucky"!
4. We were supposed to have been running a VOIP system a week or so ago.
This would make nearly all our phone jacks useless. Those can not
(easily) be used for network devices as they now only have either 2 or 4
wires going to them.
5. Shortly before the projected cut-over date, we ran out of wire. Some
requests were made to move a few phones. So, do we go out and buy a spool
of wire which we'll not need by September, do we do the bad thing and use
blue wires where orange wires are actually appropriate, do we banjo the
current wires because some wires are about 3" too short to reach when
running the wires "properly", or do we just refuse to move the phones?
Oh, do I miss the patch panels!!!!!
