a) Avoid dlink/netgear/linksys like the plague. If it's cheap, it's cheap for a reason. The top 3 switch vendors are Cisco HP and 3com for a reason, I would stick with one of them.
b) Chassis vs stack: it depends on the port density, traffic patterns, and connectivity to the network core. If *I* were to stack a series of gigabit switches, I would use something that has dedicated high-speed stacking ports using 10G-E or faster, like a Cisco 3750G, or ProCurve 2900-48G. The 3com 4500G you mentioned is vaguely comparable.
