Do you really need gigabit to each desktop? Consider weather you truly need it, if your wiring is up to the requirements, (Any split pairs? All Cat5e or better?) and if the return is worth the investment.
The more ports per switch, the more bandwidth you will want between switches. Going with a big chassis switch resolves that, but they are quite spendy. What we ended up doing when looking to replace our 3Com 3300s is purchase inexpensive Linsys (by Cisco) 48-port Gigabyte switches. _Do_ _not_ make the same mistake. Now that we know better, we are moving to HP 2510-24 siwtches, with a 2510G-24 Gigabit switch to stack them together. Individual switches are cheap, fanless (No moving parts means less things to go wrong) and feature complete. Not to mention the lifetime warranty. Whatever you do, avoid the Linksys.
