Actually, when I was in school, it was significant and they did it for
republican and democratic presidents as the peaceful transition of
power without bloodshed is a hallmark and strength of the US
democratic process and a wonderful introduction to the potential civic
responsibilities one may grow up to assume.   Maybe your school was
different.
