Ya, but you can use the free VI Client (not the for-pay VI stuff) to
manage those ESXi servers for which you got a free license code.

Sounds like the OP is saying there is no 4.0 equiv. to a standalone VI
Client?

ESXi may be freeware but you still need license codes from VMware to use
it past 60 days.
