I'm not sure you are going to find anything out there that is less expensive, and gives you what you are looking for, then going with DFS in 2008. I think the 3rd party products have more features, but you will pay a premium for them. We had been using Double-Take at my previous job, and switched to DFS with 2008.

When attempting to access the DFS share, we noticed that sometimes the data is not there, depending on which server we access at the moment.
