Bad experiences with quality and price of their offerings, YMMV

Well, the batteries should be somewhat 'standard' among the battery
manufacturers and not a proprietary design, like in some really new hybrid
cars ..

I'd try a battery sales/replacement company like Voltex

They have a location only a couple of miles from me and I use them for
simple UPS battery replacement as well as for my car... here's their main
web site if you want to look up any relatively close contacts to you :
http://www.voltex.com/

Subject: On-line UPS units

Greetings!

A few years ago, we had a period of bad power (from the utility company).
Our network backbone equipment (switches and routers) were plugged into APC
SmartUPS 1400 units. For some reason, they were not "kicking in quickly
enough" during brown-outs and "blinks". As a result of power being
disrupted to our switches for a tiny fraction of a second, pieces of the
phone system we had then would "break" and need immediate attention to
restore full functionality.

The APC units are what they call "Line Interactive" and _should_ not have
had this little blink. (We could increase the sensitivity a notch.
However, we found that in a power outage, they would consider power from our
generator "dirty" and would remain on battery until drained - not
desirable!) It was suggested we go with an "On-line" unit, where the power
comes directly from the battery (and the utility power keeps the battery
charged). We went with a TRIPP-Lite SmartOnline SU1000XL.

It (and especially its batteries) are getting old, so the (painful) process
of changing batteries is coming. (All equipment powered by this UPS need to
be shut down to pull the batteries in a system which normally supplies power
by way of its batteries.) Oh yeah - we operate an emergency call center
24x365 and have no "maintenace window".

Well, surprise! surprise! Not only is this model discontinued but
TRIPP-lite is no longer able to supply or even suggest replacement batteries
for me.

Right now, there are no warning lights, etc showing. However, it's only a
matter of time. Any suggestions here? That is...

1. Can (I believe it is) 3 more-or-less "standard" 12 lead acid batteries be
obtained and used with the existing wiring harness?

2. Do any of the battery companies claim they have a battery pack (and will
stand behind it) for a TripLite SU1000XL?

3. Any other suggestions for bailing me out of this impending disaster?

Thanks!
