If you're creating memos, perhaps. 

For standard email communication, a PDA/smartphone is more than adequate.  I 
can process a considerable amount of email on my phone -- in far more places 
than a laptop would be appropriate or convenient. 

And, at a much better price.

Actually, I agree with that sentiment. Email on a phone is an abomination.
