This is a good time to interject a possible change in strategy.
Maybe backup to nearline ( disk ) and then back nearline to tape or other removable drive. I’ve seen in at least one location where this facilitate a more efficient backup to tape OFF the production resources. Helping someone do the wrong thing efficiently is not nearly as good as helping them do the right thing. For off-site backups, I would settle for tape over disk, especially if I didn't want the recipient accessing it *too* easily.
