All WAN sites have identical hardware, identical firmware. And on most
of them I'm even using the same port. I rebuilt the network a few years
back and purchased new equipment for every site.

My ISP sales engineer sent me a message a moment ago that this is a
"simple fix" and they might have done something wrong with the VLANs on
their side. I'll know shortly.

The only thing I can say is at the "good" sites the ISP put in brand
new hardware and also brought fiber to the sites. The other sites are
using existing hardware, maybe installed a few years ago. I mentioned
this to my ISP and was promptly ignored.

Are there any sites that have good performance, and can you identify
whether the hardware at those sites is the same? I think someone else
alluded to differences in hardware at your various sites could be a
problem. I'd start looking in that direction.

Back to my original question, speed tests tell me I am only getting
minimum bandwidth at all sites - not cool. So this might be part of the
issue I am having with my ME. This might be part of the issue.

Yes, but is that spelled out in an SLA...
And even then, what happens when they oops?

The ISP tells me that only we can see our data on Metro E.
Thanks, I can spell HIPAA too. We live it here in health care.

Delineation of public/non-controlled network to private/controlled
network, would be my reasoning.
Also, he is talking about an INTERNET connection. Why would you not
firewall your ISP connection???
We run Cisco VPN across all of our (non-internet) Metro-E links, just
to be able to say that we know our data is secure. HIPAA anyone?

Firewall? Why are you routing that through a firewall? Our setup is our
ISP's equipment is connected directly to a second core switch for Metro
E.

We recently went from a T1 Internet connection to 10meg Metro-E and we
tested 10 megs to our ISP, but only 5 to Miami, 3 to Atlanta, and only
1meg to the West Coast.
Our problem was our Firewall couldn’t handle the throughput.

Something is dirty somewhere. Could be a misconfigured port along the
way, could be bad cabling, etc…

Thanks,

Subject: Metro Ethernet ?

Folks,

I am converting our network from point to point to MVLS/Metro Ethernet.

What I am noticing at some sites is that performance is worse that with
the point to point circuit. Ping times greatly increased, collisions,
etc. I've been working with my provider to get this resolved. First they
thought it was a speed mismatch issue, so the provider's equipment and
my equipment were changed to the same setting (full 100). That's not
working and now we'll probably change it to full 10 (since the
allocation is 5 Mbps anyway). I can also do some rate shaping on my
switches, but it's a PITA and I was hoping to avoid it.

Anyone else have these issues with conversion? Some sites are fine,
others are not. All have same switches, model, firmware, config for
trunk ports.

I haven't pulled out my bag o software to look at what's on the pipe,
anyone have any that would be best for this scenario? I have Praesser
but I really need a site to site test/analysis tool. I just downloaded
Qcheck and will see if that does it. I've also asked my provider to give
me some statistics on traffic they see.

Recommendations and comments welcome.
