I get it, thanks. He didn't put much info on his profile so this is part of
the issue I think, and it looks like he has not added any other colleagues in
common.

A - You can invite anyone you want for FREE, as long as any of the following
apply:

--- 1 - They are no more than 3 hops away from you (and they are open to
invitations)
--- 2 - They share a group with you (and allow connections/invitations through
the group)

--- 3 - You have their email address (and they are open to invitations)

--- 4 - Both of you are OpenLink members (and they accept
connections/invitations via OpenLink) -- This one is not exactly free

If they are not open to invitation, then none of the points above matter.

B - You can get a cheaper membership than the set they readily advertise:
Personal Plus - http://www.linkedin.com/personalplus
---- This gets you access to OpenLink, plus a few other perks, for only $5/mo

While LI doesn't allow you to just reach anyone directly, unlike FB, it does
facilitate having people introduce you. This is another method that can get you
to someone who is not a direct connection, and for whom you do not have an
email address. (There's also InMail, but that costs money)

Hey Folks,
It's been a while since I was on LinkedIn. Yesterday I was looking for a past
colleague, found him, but could not send him an invite as this person was "out
of network". I was able to join another past colleague since we had someone in
common as part of our network.
I was able to send the past colleague a message, if I signed-up for at
$24/month "upgrade". Since I don't use LinkedIn except for occasional
professional contacts, it's hardly worth it.
I thought when I first signed up with LinkedIn I could invite anyone to be part
of my network. Maybe I'm wrong and missing something. But since I can't just
invite anyone, anymore, like Face Book, why bother? Maybe $24 a year, but a
month?
If I'm mistaken please show me the light...
Tom
