+10, same here. It all depends on what your purpose is. ASB is also very much
on point. You build your profile and contacts/connections when you don't need
it, because you never know when things will change and you might need it - if
you don't have it and you need it, it's too late. And, for anyone who changes
positions, it helps you to be able to maintain contacts. In some companies,
when you give your notice, they walk you out the dor, with no further access to
your %work% email. Suggestion to tie BOTH your work email and your personal
email to your LinkedIn profile so that you can always maintain access easily.
You can limit what emails you get from LinkedIn fairly easily. If get an invite
from someone I don't know, I simply ignore or deny it. End of story.

I will say that once you get a substantial number of contacts, it is QUITE
interesting to scroll through the "people you may know". It is also interesting
to see how many hops Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, and Kevin Bacon are from
you... What was that about 6 degrees of separation?

Interestingly I've ad almost the opposite experience. I can honestly say I
gained my current position entirely via LinkedIn. BUt like most things you
have to work at it. You get out what you put into it and I'm very selective
about who I connect with. Easy enough to deny requests.

I hate LinkedIn. :(

I had signed up for it, the free account. But right after that, I started to
get invites from people I didn't know. Hated it. It was not beneficial to me.

I just feel it rude that someone wants to invite me to be part of their group,
when I don't know them. Lately, I have been getting invites from recruiters,
who I don't know, and then they want me to go to their sites and fill out job
apps. Waste of my time.

My .02 worth.

Thanks for that link ASB! I hadn't been given that option from LI before.
Interestingly they want to charge me a tad more than $5/mo...but then I'm not
surprised they like you better. :)

A - You can invite anyone you want for FREE, as long as any of the following
apply:

--- 1 - They are no more than 3 hops away from you (and they are open to
invitations)
--- 2 - They share a group with you (and allow connections/invitations through
the group)
--- 3 - You have their email address (and they are open to invitations)
--- 4 - Both of you are OpenLink members (and they accept
connections/invitations via OpenLink) -- This one is not exactly free

If they are not open to invitation, then none of the points above matter.

B - You can get a cheaper membership than the set they readily advertise:
Personal Plus - http://www.linkedin.com/personalplus
---- This gets you access to OpenLink, plus a few other perks, for only $5/mo

While LI doesn't allow you to just reach anyone directly, unlike FB, it does
facilitate having people introduce you. This is another method that can get
you to someone who is not a direct connection, and for whom you do not have an
email address. (There's also InMail, but that costs money)

Hey Folks,

It's been a while since I was on LinkedIn. Yesterday I was looking for a past
colleague, found him, but could not send him an invite as this person was "out
of network". I was able to join another past colleague since we had someone in
common as part of our network.

I was able to send the past colleague a message, if I signed-up for at
$24/month "upgrade". Since I don't use LinkedIn except for occasional
professional contacts, it's hardly worth it.

I thought when I first signed up with LinkedIn I could invite anyone to be part
of my network. Maybe I'm wrong and missing something. But since I can't just
invite anyone, anymore, like Face Book, why bother? Maybe $24 a year, but a
month?

If I'm mistaken please show me the light...

Tom
