We would get a lot of events indicating all snapshots were deleted due to heavy
i/o, or something like that. For our heavily accessed data volumes, I now use
a separate drive (slower SATA storage works well for this on our SAN) and
haven't seen one of these errors in the several years since changing it.

I had the same issue and that is why I just put it on the separate drive.

I've been moving them to a separate drive.

You can size the drive appropriately by observing how much space is used by the
snaps when you look at the shadow copy settings.

Curious to see this recommendation as well - I once wondered where disk space
was going until I found the shadow copies settings...

I have just used existing drive myself and had never even thought about another
option.

Subject: Shadow Copies - Dedicated Drive?

Those of you with servers with several volumes/lun's full of data, if you're
using Shadow Copies do you use a dedicated drive for the shadow copy data
volume or do you just use the free space on the drive you're shadowing?

Thanks,
Paul
