The interesting catch-22 is that if you start proposing broad, strategic
proposals, you often get told that you don't understand the full picture,
and to just stick what what you were hired to do.

My advice to David is to vent (offsite) for a little, then suck it up and do
two things simultaneously:

   - Start making a few broad, corporate proposals that have a clear impact
on revenue or the bottom line
   - Start looking at what the market might be able to offer you elsewhere

Oh, and thank your manager's manager for the feedback in an email and in
person.

Whatever you do, do not disengage and retreat to a corner, as there will
likely be some increased scrutiny of your activities for the next few weeks
until they are comfortable that you are not disgruntled.

I wouldn't have posted what you just posted via a corporate email. That's
what webmail over HTTPS is for.
