Our company is really big on having a BS or Masters degree for upper level positions and since I have neither the time or inclination to go back and finish school I'm stuck. The option my boss and I are focusing on is creating a new position where we can dictate guidelines for the position.

Yeah, someone didn't think it through when those requirements were added to existing employee's transcripts. An MCSE requirement also appeared, and the description states the following: The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the premier certification for professionals who analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform and Microsoft Windows Server System. Implementation responsibilities include installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems. The MCSE credential is one of the most widely recognized technical certifications in the industry. By earning the premier MCSE credential, individuals are demonstrating that they have the skills necessary to lead organizations in the successful design, implementation, and administration of the most advanced Windows operating system and Microsoft Windows Server System. I think they may need to update these requirements. We don't even have any Windows 2000 systems any longer. :-) - Sean On Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 11:01 AM, My New Display Name for Bob. :) <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: An A+?!?! David, These types of scenarios can definitely be frustrating. Especially when it's acknowledged that you're qualified for the position. I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to one up you or anything, but I find myself in a similar predicament. I've been in the field almost as long as you, and with my current employer going on 10 years. I've been told for the past year (or longer) that I am more than qualified to be promoted to a Senior Analyst position. On top of that, I already have the same level of responsbilities, project load, attend the same meetings, etc. as the existing Senior Analysts. However, my manager (or their boss) wants to see an updated certification. My MCP, MCP+I and MCSE are all from NT4 and my CCA is from Presentation server 4. They'd like to see an MCITP level cert. This frustrates me because I'm handling the workload of a senior analyst, my vacation requests are scrutinized because of their lack of providing cross-training opportunities leaves me the ony resident "expert" on a number of key systems, yet I can't "officially" handle the new title until I obtain a new cert. With all of that said, they've clearly outlined to me what it will take to be promoted and I have yet to meet those requirements. In the end, I have no one else to blame but myself. I'll admit that my family life takes presedence over my desire to study. Of course the recent straw that is about to break the camels back is the fact that they recently added an A+ cert to my list of existing training requirements....but anyway, I digress. If it's not clear to you what is required to be promoted, ask for clarification. If you feel that the requirements don't warrant the results, it may be time to start looking for other opportunities. - Sean On Fri, Mar 4, 2011 at 9:51 AM, David Lum <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: vent mode:on I asked for a promotion to Sr. Systems Engineer but I have been denied. Talking to my boss she feels I am qualified but her boss disagrees - not because I don't fit the roles and skill set of a Sr. SE as listed in our job description, but because she wants to "see more broad scoped project proposals". Yeah sorry that my evaluation of products used across the enterprise for encrypting our laptops (chose PGP), remote access (went with RDS), 3rd party patching (Shavlik), and then doing the work of standing up the servers and installing configuring, deploying and then handing off of said items all in the last 12 months isn't broad enough... "You're really great at what you do and you meet the job description but it's not enough, sorry". Some of you guys can relate, right? I've only been doing IT professionally for 16 years...and admin-y stuff for 12 of that.
