Almost the same scenario as you Jonathan. It's not a matter of should I
virtualize or not because I am familiar with what we have and what we
need. My question is more along the lines of how do I make a convincing
argument to invest in a virtual environment. Current environment is 1
Dell 1950 that currently does SharePoint, FTP, etc.. and DC to name a
few. I have only been here a few months and there is no centralized A/V
or to make it easy there isn't much in place other than what was stated
and all on one server. In near future we will need A/V server,
dedicated SharePoint server, Exchange server, to name a few and would
like all the HA features to replicate offsite.

Thank you,

You don't provide nearly enough information to be specific to your case,
so I'll be specific to mine.

My company was rapidly growing in the closet. When I started with the
firm (not in IT, at the time) there was one (Novell) server. When I
took over IT there were three (Windows, Windows XP, and the Novell that
the other guy wouldn't kill off) servers. Within a year, I had demands
for 3 more and a need for 2 more from the IT side of things (AV
Management and WSUS). If you virtualize, you can provision servers
(depending on licensing) so that only one app is installed on a server.
This is almost a necessity for line of business apps we run. It's also
nice for keeping the AV management server, file and print services,
email and directory services on their own server instance.

If you virtualize storage, as I did at the time, you can also pursue
high availability options. Even without high availability, being able
to bring a vitrual machine up on another physical host with 2 minutes of
effort is really nice.

Hello All,

I have been asked to provide a comparison of the two and why going to a
virtualized environment would benefit our company. Although I have a
solid idea of what needs to be said I wanted to see if anyone had a good
site(s)with high level information that would help me in convincing
management (as non-technical as you can get) to virtualize. We are a
small shop (less than 50 users) who will soon double in size so we will
need to start adding more systems and bring email in house etc. Any
help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
