One approach you can take is this: Determine what your costs AND time for growth would be as your organization grows. Contrast those costs and that provisioning time with a virtualized infrastructure. (Be sure to add the cost and time of building out the virtualization infrastructure, and any training costs for staff.)
Then, once you have these numbers, you'll know whether or not you need to make them pretty or pursue a different path. Do you have servers that are obsolete and need to be replaced? Could you benefit from some space consolidation? Etc...
