I had been driving around 35 years when I first encountered one.The three counties I drive in most have one each (that I have noticed so far) so they are still pretty rare, at least where I frequent.

Over here we hardly notice them. Interesting cultural comparison. The new improved yield signs are Octaganol, red and say 'Stop' but many seem to think that is merely a suggestion. The new improved stop signs are Triangular, red and white and say 'Yield'. Many people seem to think this is an opertunity to halt forward motion and meditate on this strange object while trying to figure out if it's their turn to go or not. Or at least that they follow the rules. Most people don't seem to know what a "Yield" sign means. If people yield properly, rotaries (that's what we call 'em up here in New England) work okay in light usage. Once you start getting traffic volume, though, they tend to get "stuck" with one road entering and everyone else having to wait forever, and/or force a lot of stop-and-go entering.
