1400 pb, is that still the case?
Thanks. Also, I have an old Debian Bible circa Potato or Woody. Does it still 
hold water as far as some configuration info and command line?

read further this time and followed daniel's suggestion and installed the 
xwindow core and system. The question now facing me on the screen is a choice 
between gdm and xdm. Any thoughts on which one to choose. I like kde and gnome, 
but I would also like whichever of these two is easiest to configure.

Debian without a gui is like bread without butter.

went thru apt get and install then setup resulting in the following terminal 
error message:

Setting up xserver--xfree86 (4..3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1)...
pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci
lspci: Cannot find any working access method.

Help! ...Please?

You just have to select USB keyboard; that always worked for me.
