My experience is that you can't. Especially not if you have a lot going in
your tree. Even if you preview (and evertyhing is cached), things like paint
nodes and other nodes bogs down performance. To get the best out of the
viewer in terms of performance you'd need a pretty clean comp (few nodes),
and close down all property panels. The best if of course to render the comp
to disk and then bring it back to look at it. As Deke said you should use a
format that is fast to read, like dpx or maybe uncompressed tiff. But I
shouldn't really trust nuke's viewer when it comes to playback. The foundry
have made it better but
