I'd suppose there is a correlation between the maximum cache amount available for Nuke and the max open files. If, say, you have caching going on and you have put 100 gig open for your cache, then at some point the size of the cache that is available is going exceed the maximum openfiles ulimit.

Foundry probably should make Nuke respect ulimits though and "failsafe" caching when ulimit is reached. Or just recycle the cache.
